Suspected Islamic extremists attacked an agricultural college in the dead of night, gunning down dozens of students as they slept in dormitories and torching classrooms in an ongoing Islamic uprising in northeast Nigeria, the school's provost said.

As many as 50 students may have been killed in the attack that began at about 1am Sunday in rural Gujba, provost Molima Idi Mato of the Yobe State College of Agriculture, told Associated Press

It was Nokia bought few weeks back and now its Blackberry that was bought by Fairfax

Enjoy those BlackBerry devices you have, because they may be the last ones they ever make.

The company has agreed to a buyout from Fairfax Financial Holdings—a group that had already owned about a 10-percent stake in the company—for $4.7 billion. A sad thought for the company when, just in 2008, they were valued at $83 billion. Current shareholders will be bought out for about $9 a share, and the company will be taken private after that, as long as another group doesn't come along and offer a higher bid within six weeks (don't hold your breath.) If you think BlackBerry's phones were bad, things are even worse at the workplace: they recently announced that they're expecting a $950 million loss for its second quarter, and would be firing 4,500 people. That's about 40-percent of its global employees. Ouch.

If things hold up and a new buyer doesn't come forward, it is widely expected that the company will drop out of the hardware phone business and concentrate on its enterprise strategy, since it is the phones that were once so hot that people fell out of love with, and led to the company's demise in the end.

Apple unveils new low-cost iphone 5c and standard iphone 5s

Apple's latest iPhones will come in a bevy of colors and two distinct designs, one made of plastic and the other that aims to be "the gold standard of smartphones" and reads your fingerprint.
Apple unveiled the latest iPhone models, available on September 20, during an event at its Cupertino, California, headquarters. The move comes as rival phones from Samsung and other manufacturers are challenging Apple's hold on the smartphone market.
The lower-cost iPhone 5C will be available in five colors green, blue, yellow, pink and white. CEO Tim Cook calls it "more fun and colorful" than any other iPhone. The 5C has a 4-inch (10-centimetre) Retina display and is powered by Apple's A6 chip. It also has an 8 megapixel camera, live photo filters and a rear cover that lights up.
The iPhone 5C will cost $US99 (NZ$122) for a 16 gigabyte model and $199 for a 32 gigabyte model with a two-year wireless contract. The phone is expected to help Apple boost sales in China and other areas where people don't have as much money to spend on new gadgets as they do in the U.S. and Europe.
The second phone, the 5S, is "the most forward-looking phone we have ever created," said Phil Schiller, senior vice president of worldwide marketing at Apple

Nadal wins the 2013 US Open at Djokovic

Vamos Rafa.

Nadal wins the second US Open title against Djokovic at Flushing Meadows, New YorkThe third final in four years between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic delivered another thriller. And for the second time, Nadal came out on top, winning the 2013 men's singles title, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. The title is the second US Open crown of Nadal's esteemed career, which now features 13 Grand Slam singles titles -- third all-time behind only Roger Federer (17) and Pete Sampras (14).
The match turned in the third set. With the score tied 4-all, Nadal saved three break points on his serve, then broke Djokovic to go up two sets to one. From there, he cruised in the final set, winning eight of the match's last nine games to secure a 2013 title to go alongside the championship he won in 2010.
With the victory, Nadal improves to 22-0 on hard courts this year and matches the record payday won by Serena Williams on Sunday -- $3.6 million, $2.6 million as the US Open champion and $1 million in bonus prize money as the Emirates Airline US Open Series champion.

Wikileaks details how NZ spies will work

Confidential new security industry documents released by Wikileaks reveal details of the kinds of surveillance systems that will be used in New Zealand under the controversial GCSB act.
The documents include operating manuals, promotional material and invoices from companies specialising in internet and telecommunications spying equipment.
This includes equipment for "mass monitoring", "tactical internet monitoring", "deep packet inspection" and "data warehousing". British, German and Swiss companies promised to "fulfill the customer's needs" for "massive data interception and retention".
Special off-the-shelf systems also provide governments with speech identification, facial recognition and number plate recognition technology.
The Government Communications Security Bureau Act passed in Parliament by 61 votes to 59 two weeks ago after months of controversy including mass public protests.
The laws were drafted in the wake of a succession of blunders by the GCSB, New Zealand's foreign intelligence agency, which included illegally spying on German internet entrepreneur Kim Dotcom.
The new legislation gives it the power to spy on New Zealanders

A 120 car pile-up near London

Dozens of people were hurt, some seriously, when more than 100 cars were caught up in a huge pile-up on a bridge east of London during foggy conditions on Thursday morning (local time).

In dense fog at the start of morning rush hour, eight motorists were seriously injured, 60 less seriously, and hundreds left standing in the road unhurt but terrified near the tangled remains of their cars as more than 120 vehicles ploughed into one another on the Sheppey bridge crossing in Kent.
Witnesses described 10 minutes of eerie mayhem, as they heard crash after crash of vehicles invisible in the fog. Many claimed motorists were approaching the bridge at speed and with no headlamps, and some who realised something was wrong stopped but were then struck by more vehicles piling into the scene. Chief Inspector Andy Reeves, of Kent police, said it was "remarkable" that nobody was killed.
The mangled wrecks of cars and lorries were strewn across the Sheppey Crossing as vehicles smashed into each other in a series of collisions at about 7.20am (6.30pm NZ time).

Aerial view oft he pile up:

Android names the new 4.4 version as Kit Kat

Google, which is known for nick-naming its Android mobile operating systems for smartphones and tablets after desserts, has chosen a brand-name candy for its 4.4 version that's expected to launch soon: Kit Kat.
Financial terms weren't disclosed for the sweet deal between Google and Hershey, which makes Kit Kat. But the deal shows that naming a stadium or sponsoring a TV show can be seen as old school. The latest marketing craze may be to slap a brand name on a tech product.
